![]() ![]() A bit flowery in places for my personal taste, but a book I would absolutely recommend and I look forward to more from this author. As its told in first-person POV, we experience the constant ping-ponging of her struggle of what is right and wrong, spiritually and societally – especially through Ijeoma’s interactions with her mother. ![]() This is ultimately a novel about self-acceptance in a society that is screaming “you are wrong!” in the most extreme ways. As heartache and tragedy befalls the protagonist, Ijeoma, as she experiences the war in Nigeria during her formative years and a forbidden love as the war ends, everything is written with such emotion and clarity that you can’t help but feel everything along with Ijeoma, good and bad, love and grief, joy and horrible guilt. I was pulled into this novel from the first pages Okparanta’s style of writing is descriptive and beautiful. Goodreads Summary: Inspired by Nigeria’s folktales and its war, Under the Udala Trees is a deeply searching, powerful debut about the dangers of living and loving openly. “Under the Udala Trees” by Chinelo Okparanta ![]()
